Why # 6

Why are we freaking out about the dreaded Swine Flu here in the states, when not 1, at this moment American has died from this new flu?  With roughly 35,000 Americans dying yearly from the "regular" flu, why is the Swine Flu such a concern to our government?

Come on Jason, you can do it!!!

hi! i thought this was an interesting question, and it's been on my mind since you asked it. i've been on the lookout for some bit of insight. first, i think people are freaking out because that's what some people do, but as for why it's a big deal to health professionals, i found this article that i thought had several good answers.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=103711274

it ends by saying:
there is another less reassuring lesson from the previous big shifts in flu viruses. They caused mild disease when they first appeared in the spring, but they all caused big flu seasons when they returned in the fall as the new dominant virus. That's one reason that health officials are taking the new virus very seriously.

as for government, i heard a bite for a story that'll supposedly be on tomorrow about how the flu pandemic of 1918 was made worse by the government lying about it. i'm anticipating the story saying that part of the reason this is such a hot topic right now, is because nobody wants to get blamed for not doing everything they could to warn people.
