Darn Good

I am a picky eater. I always have been. I get this wonderful quality from my dad. In being a picky eater there is the tendency to find something I like and stick with it. This is what I want to share with you tonight.

If I had to choose one meal to eat at any given point in time it would be a Rubio's Fish Taco. This is a local chain from my childhood in Southern California. I can't explain to you how great these fish tacos are. Rubio's sells other items, but I have never ordered anything but the fish taco. For those of you who think you have a had a good fish taco at some mamby-pamby mexican restaurant you are sadly mistaken. There is not better fish taco than Rubios.

What makes the fish taco so great is the mixture of white and red sauce. Shar has mastered this combination and twice in the last 4 nights we have had some great fish tacos. I can't explain to you how wonderful it is to have a small taste of a California treat here in Temple Texas. These are some darn good tacos.

If you could have one food item from anywhere, what would it be? It wouldn't be as good as a Rubios Fish Taco, but share your favorite anyway. If you have had a Rubios, let me know also.

Saying the words fish and taco in the same sentence makes me gag! And you claim to be a picky eater. Anyone who can eat a "fish taco" couldn't possibly be a picky eater. Now a real meal is fresh black eyed peas, vine ripe tomatoes, fried okra (rolled in corn meal)and corn bread. My mother-in-law does it perfectly. Then a slice of her hot pineapple pie with a dip of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream. Isn't it wonderful we all have different tastes and like different things, food and otherwise, but we can all be one in Christ. You are a special guy with an even more special family. Barbara and I love you, "Shar," Blake and Anna even if you like FISH TACOS. God bless you and your strange tastes.

There was a place that our good friends Jason and Allison introduced to us when they lived in Dallas. It was a hot dog and custard shop. I had never had frozen custard before, but it was wonderful. The pistachio frozen custard was my favorite. It is hard to find a good cone of frozen custard but Culvers in South Austin also makes a mighty good pecan praline custard.

James is right, as always, saying fish and taco in the same sentenance makes me gag also!

The half-order of chicken fried steak, bakes potato, rolls, and iced tea at "old" Jody's in Temple is the best! Good thing I don't have easy access anymore!

Rubio's rocks. We live in Phoenix and have them all over. People from your neck of the woods (no offense) always think they sound so disgusting. They are just kidding themselves! Rubio's has expanded their menu lately, but I never venture far beyond the trusty taco...I am curious about their beer-battered fries though. I also like Wahoo's in S. cal. We don't have them yet. I remember your wife from Abilene Christian. I was in Kojies and a few years older than her. Are you guys going to homecoming? We are considering! Also, where in S.Cal are you from? I was born and lived in O.County until elementary. P.S. Your kids are precious little people!

MDM - I am from Escondido, about 30 miles north of San Diego. Sharla remembers you also and says hi. From your blog it sounds like you are busy but doing well. We won't make it to Homecoming due to my football schedule. Thanks for your comment and your defense of the Fish Taco.

The Mexican candy from Monterrey House in Houston...I actually found a recipe for it awhile back and I made it...it wasn't half bad. But it still wasn't Monterrey House!

Warm donut holes OR powdered sugar cake donuts from A.M Donuts in Abilene! Shipley's who?

Sarah said...

Debbie -- TRAITOR! I am having your picture and blog posted at the register of Shipley's. A.M. is, unquestionably, the best donut in Abilene, but it pales in comparison to Shipley's.

One food item depends on my mood. Sometimes a huge tub of movie popcorn will do it, but the shrimp portofino at Macaroni Grill (that Abilene, sadly, doesn't have) is always a good thing.

Fish tacos, can't say that I have tried them or that I want to, but more power to you. By the way, I thought that my poppyseed chicken was tops on your list. Why didn't I get a mention in this blog?

Bor - I do have to agree with you that those Rubios fish tacos are very good. Of course right up there I'd also have to list a double double from In N Out, especially after a very long day when you're really hungry. To go back a bit in history, you'd also have to consider the "Oakey Burger" from J&M Cafe in the beautiful city of Holtville, CA. It may be that memory makes things bigger than they really were but I remember that thing begin about as big as my face. Back to Rubios, every time they have a "2 tacos for 2 bucks" deal going I have to stop in have a couple in memory of you. Here's to good eating...

Rubio's fish tacos are DISGUSTING.( Dave loves them. But he eats anything!) Yes, I have actually eaten one. The shrimp ones are good, and their hot sauce is not too shabby, either.
Okay, with Kenny on the In-N-Out, although I'm a fan of number two with a Diet Coke. (balance, right?)
Chopped beef sandwhich, hotwater corn bread and sweet tea from Harold's BBQ in Abilene; Fuji japanese in the same locale.
The Shrimp ala Mexicana in Jalisco's in Belton, with the hot sauce, queso & chips.
Cuban food at Cafe' Atlantic in Pasadena, CA - also Thai food from Chandra (same city)
Shrimp gumbo from old cajun ladies who know how to cook it - add some boudin and crusty french bread.
Stuffed crab from Gaido's in Galveston.
Chewy pralines from Lammes candy (Austin , TX)
Homemade tamales.
fried okra. fried cheese. fried anything.
GRAVY. Gravy. GRAVY!!!!!!!!!!!!
At home: Homemade fried chicken, twice-baked potatoes, green beans, corn on the cob, strawberries, rolls & cornbread followed by blackberry cobbler and BLUEBELL. Then a Cowboys game (where they win)and a nap.
I'm hungry. Thanks a lot.

hey byron i remember you taking me to that robos place one time. do you remember that? you made fun of me for getting it a different way than you do. i think Sharla got mad at you for it probably. Yea Sharla's look she gave you was a lot better than the taco. I think that's my answer. I would go without my last meal to see Sharla give you "the look."

Wrangler Bar-B-Que baby....that's right, of Escondido California, in the heart of the East Valley Parkway restaurant row. Man oh man, it hasn't changed since you and I were there in the late 70's playing with the cigarette machine at the entryway.
